Thawing1
- Thaw in the outer wrapper for a minimum of 30 minutes in a circulating water bath at +30 °C to +37 °C
- Prevent water from contaminating the entry port
- Temperature of the bath should not fall outside the +30 °C to +37 °C range
- Thawing time depends on the number of bags thawed in parallel. Ensure that the temperature remains within the range when thawing several bags.
- Thawing time should not be longer than 60 minutes.
- Place the Octaplasma® bags on the agitation plate according to the manufacturer instructions and thaw plasma using the fast-tempering function
- When +37 °C blood component temperature is indicated on the temperature display terminate the tempering process and remove the bags.
- Other validated thawing systems for frozen Octaplasma® can be used.
- Allow the content of the bag to warm to approximately +37 °C before infusion.
- The temperature of Octaplasma® must not exceed +37 °C.
- Remove the outer wrapper and examine the bag for cracks or leaks.
- Avoid shaking.
- Do not use solutions that are cloudy or have deposits.
- Do not refreeze
Dosage1
Dosage depends on the clinical situation, underlying disorder, individual patient, treatment regimen and physician discretion.
- Starting dose : 12-15 mL/kg body weight
- The infusion rate should not exceed 1 mL Octaplasma®/kg bodyweight/min.
Administration1
Octaplasma® must be administered by intravenous infusion after thawing using an infusion set with a filter. Follow aseptic technique.
- Administration must be based on ABO-blood group specificity. In emergency cases, blood group AB can be regarded as universal plasma.
- To avoid possible clot formation, solutions containing calcium must not be administered by the same intravenous line
- Octaplasma® can be mixed with red blood cells and platelets.
- Octaplasma® must not be mixed with other drugs as inactivation and precipitation may occur.
- Transfuse only fully thawed bags of Octaplasma® which is a clear, yellow solution without cloudiness or precipitates.
Octaplasma® product monograph recommends 30 minutes thawing time at 37°C, since this time is valid for all devices.
It is suggested that hospitals use their judgment based on the thawing device used locally and the number of bags being thawed. Transfuse only fully thawed bags of Octaplasma® which is a clear, yellow solution without cloudiness or precipitates.
